At the end of three weeks of the hearing, the Northern University court convicted Dino Scala, nicknamed the “sambar rapist,” in 54 of the 56 cases of rape or sexual assault (or attempted) she was sentenced for.
He was sentenced on 1 July to the maximum sentence: 20 years in prison, and two-thirds of the security.
His plea “shows, if we still need him, that he has nothing to do with the victims, and that his apologies are just facades,” responds Mie Katie Richard, attorney for four victims.
“They still have to wait another month before they can finally turn the page on what happened to them years ago,” she added. “He enjoys it.”
His new trial should take place within several months before the Assize Court of Appeal in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais).
“They are a little disappointed that they have to resume the trial,” the attorney for nine victims, Me Fanny Bruyerre, commented. “Their questions are: + Are we still going back? Are we still seeing? +”.

Dino Scala, 61, is being tried in this unusual case for 17 rapes, 12 attempted rapes and 27 assaults or attempted sexual assaults, committed between 1988 and 2018 near his home, around the Sambre River, in France but also in Belgium. He only got to know 40 of them.
During the hearing, he had offered his “apology to the victims” briefly.
The latter considered the punishment insufficient given the number of alleged acts.
One of the attorneys general, Annelies Kao, also ruled that the sentence imposed was “too low”, calling in her requests to consider taking into account the serial nature of the sexual offenses and their intentionality.
The trial did not completely remove the mystery about the accused, a well-integrated worker, married, father of a family, coach of a football club, but with a personality characterized, according to a psychological expert, by the “abyss” between the social aspect. and the hidden side.
